Back in 2008, MW Capacity went on a hunt for images of George Rose’s artwork. Though Rose is an artist who is well-regarded by other artists, the quintessential “artist’s artist”, it was almost impossible to find images of his work online. For our 2008 post on Rose, we had to publish scans of 30 year old slides. Rose’s work has been shown several times over the years since, at Simpson College and as part of a travelling exhibit curated by the Midwest Paint Group.
Currently, Wright State University’s Art Galleries are exhibiting a collection of Rose’s self portraits. The gallery has shared with us a number of images of the paintings, slowly adding to the number of images of Rose’s work available online.
All images are courtesy of Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries. MW Capacity would like to thank the gallery, and Director Tess Cortes, for allowing us to share these images.
A number of years ago I left a comment re. George Rose on this site and I guess I offended the editor or something, but it was wiped off. As I recall, my comment just touched on the fact that George was a great painter and it was a shame that he hadn’t gotten the recognition he deserved. I was never sure why this remark found disfavor, but in the spirit of reconciliation I write now to say thanks for posting this. The current exhibit, up until the end of March, is a real knockout and well worth the trip. In addition, there is a fantastic little catalog available for $10. All proceeds go to support the gallery and shows like this. On behalf of my fellow curators we invite your readers to come see the work of a great painter.
That’s a slight mis-representation of the comment that was removed, but oh well, good luck with the exhibit!
Well, like I said, I was never sure what caused offense. You’ve got my email address. Why not send me a note and let’s see if we can’t patch things up. It appears as if there’s enough common interest to warrant an end to hostilities.
One of my favorite conversations with a fellow artist was my conversation with George Rose regarding oil painting on paper and how to resolve foregrounds on landscapes. It was George who entered into conversation by asking me questions, like he was a student, as we viewed his landscapes on paper. I was surprised to learn we had similar struggles given his apt ability to reconcile issues in painting. That conversation repeats in my thinking often while working. What struck me as most impressive was his drive, thinking, concerns for resolution and approach. Very impressive person, painter, paintings and drawings. So happy to see his work displayed on-line.
Saw George Rose’s show today in Wright State University Art Galleries. Congratulations to Glen and other curators on mounting a strong sampling of George’s recent work — all self-portraits. I hope to see another tribute to my longtime friend and inspiring painter / teacher soon.

Professor Rose was my drawing and painting teacher. He taught me how to look at work, break the planes down and love the process. Mentor—is an understatement. He was favorite among all the art students. We knew we had someone incredible teaching us. Students emphasized in painting just because of him. Even now, 21 years after having him for a teacher, his voice is present in my work and how I look at others’ artwork. He is a game changer.
