Jennifer Moses “Portrait 11″, 2013, oil on canvas, 12″x9”
Crosscurrents in Contemporary Abstraction gives us work by 7 painters working (mostly) nonrepresentationally-ish. The work on view makes the point that there is a vast range of approach contemporary painters are finding in the form, but there’s no attempt to form any exhaustive survey of contemporary trends. In other words, risky without over-reaching. Crosscurrents is on view at the Metcalf Gallery at Taylor University in Upland, IN until February 7th. 50 points to anyone who comes up with a catchy shorthand name for the exhibit. (CrossContAbs? sounds like a fitness video on late night TV…Somebody help me here.) Full disclosure: I wrote the catalog essay for the exhibit. Maybe I should look into seeing if I can post a portion of it online here.
