Miyoko Ito is one of the highest lights in my art cosmos. I was lucky enough to get to see quite a few of her works in the years during and after my time at SAIC. Thomas McCormick Gallery in Chicago put out a wonderful book of her work called “Miyoko Ito: Mistress of the Sea” back in 2000 or so – get it if you can find it.
It’s really difficult to express the economy of her application of paint and the sorts of surfaces she produced. I’m still seduced by what she did, and really enjoy turning the memories I have of being with her work over and over in my mind as I view reproductions…
