I want to know more about this Kevin Arnold…the Wonder Years didn’t have anything like this going on. Not quite the same thing, but I was thinking of Michelangelo Pistoletto and Robert Lazzarini when I saw this work. I’m more than a little jealous honestly. Anything that operates on multiple dimensions of perception and artificiality makes my brain salivate.
Then again, the Wonder Years was a lot like this art…and also Arcade Fire.
The work has a way of winning you over. Some people walk in and instantly say “oh, wow” in response to the trompe l’oeil thing. But even people who are more suspicious of extreme realism as an agenda tend to warm up after a while. You start picking up on the decisions being made – what to paint vs. what not to paint…and also, some paintings are multi-panel – how the parts connect and disconnect.
