I really like this work. It is always refreshing to be forced to pay attention to oddities that I’ve never noticed before……in this case, it REALLY is strange that mattresses are always in floral patterns, and that there are patterns at all, considering that they are intended to be covered. Seeing that floral pattern in the context beyond a showroom borders on TOO-intimate in an unexpected, almost narrative way.
I think jssp has got it that these are about knowing and making sense of conflicting information (“gestalt” as we say to the freshman in Design I class), but the mattresses as media give it a weird, mixed-up physical quality and some possibly unwanted sense of history. A part of Kell’s work would be a good idea for interior design, but there’s this little extra edge, similar to what I get from Marcie Miller Gross’s work.
