I have some doubts that I did pick the “best” example. My thinking was pretty unscientific:
1. I like the 1,000 tags paintings best just because they reminded me of some paintings by neglected/forgotten Boston-based painter Barnet Rubinstein. He made some amazing paintings of stacks of Chinese takeaway containers that seem to have a similar tonality and facture.
2. Of the 1,000 tags paintings, I felt like this one was a little less graphic and forced a slower read. I do wonder if the other examples aren’t actually a little more successful.
3. I think all the 1,000 tags paintings have this great tension between exuberance and restraint. This less-graphic image seemed to make that more apparent ***or***you caught me: I rooted for the underdog jpeg.
