Over the last few years, I’d occasionally write to Gabriel in response to one or another of his blog entries. I always enjoyed his responses and was flattered that he’d take the time to engage with someone he hardly knew. He wrote publicly less and less recently (on account of his illness, I’m sure), so I’m grateful to have had the time I did to knock ideas back and forth with him.
He was a link to a different generation of painters and made me feel that, in some small way, I was part of a greater continuum. His was a lively mind that will be missed.
