I think the show’s title ( A wilderness of edges) really captures the spirit of this work. I like that the artist has steered me into the right interpretive context and yet leaves so much up to me. Instead of three words, I’ll offer one…hypnotic.
There’s a sense of the incidental in these, the low level of contrast, apparently thin paint, etc. that’s disguises how crucial every shape, every chromatic shift is to the unified whole.
I really like the complete package experience of these. The rock garden subjective framework creates such a rich background for the formal decisions. It frames and informs the work without prejudicing it. The paintings are compositionally intriguing and beautiful. The doodly characters are incidental and charming, and so antithetical to the serious nature of the composition. It’s as if a human made these. I really like seeing human capacity; ever-expanding human capacity.
This “Rock Garden” series is quantumly off the resonation charts for me. I’ll try to say why tomorrow.
