We’ve posted on Ms Sherman before, but I think her work merits a second look, at the very least.

every one of these paintings is just ON.
i think she’s up the level of incongruity between the drawing in the painting and the painting in the painting.
(does that make any sense?)
Yeah, I think I know what you mean.
The drawing’s gotten weirder in some, more straightforward in others. Either way, more declarative.
i’m going to gush here as well… i’m definitely planning on seeing these just to find out if my instincts are right about these images. chris’ “on” comment hits it on the head. just seems like the simple play between the broad movements are synchronized and syncopated so well with the more clustered, controlled areas… that sort of deflection and focus is really what these images seem to do for me.
so, i just get curious. it looks like this post is getting a lot of views, but no comments. i can never tell if that implies a negative response to the work or what. can i just ask if others are feeling quietly positive, or just not diggin’ it?
I’m absolutely thrilled with this work, but am feeling mute.
It’s touched by the painting vs reproduction phenomenon that’s come up in other posts, maybe. That some experiences are really good and also they don’t translate to words.
The color is bolder in the newer ones, too. Not to be Captain Obvious, here, but I think it’s a big part of their effect.
Neither that string business nor any of the other tips I got from Bonnie and the others at IU were invalid, though they weren’t of much use in my case…This whole post just made me think back to that time and how everyone learns in their own way and must know when to go it alone…
